Lightening strikes killed 17 at the wedding party in Bangladesh


Dhaka: At least 17 people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a boat struck a wedding party in northwestern Bangladesh on Wednesday. Officials gave this information.


Police officer Farid Hussain said that as soon as the boat reached the banks of Padma river in Shibganj town, lightning struck when the people attending the wedding reached the bride’s house.


“We have information about 17 deaths and several others have been admitted to the hospital,” Hussain said.


Fire service official Mehrul Islam said 14 people were injured and taken to hospital. The groom is also among the injured.


Hundreds of people die each year from lightning in Bangladesh, which declared lightning a natural disaster in 2016, when more than 200 people died in the month of May alone, including 82 in a single day. people were involved.


Most lightning deaths usually occur during the warm months of March to July.


Experts say the increase in deadly lightning strikes is related to deforestation, which has led to the disappearance of many tall trees that were previously hit by lightning.
